Technology (Greek technologia (τεχνολογία) < techne (τέχνη) "craft" + -ologia (-ολογία) "science or discipline") is the application of developments in science and engineering to benefit a group of humans, or humanity as a whole. Over two million years ago, human ancestors are believed to have used stone tools, one of the earliest examples of technology. Other early examples include the controlled use of fire, the use of clothing, and the development of agriculture.

These, and other technologies significantly affect how humans interact with the natural environment. Many important technological advances are related to transportation, some early examples being seaworthy boats, and the invention of the wheel. More recent examples include rail transport, automobiles, aviation, and spaceflight. Some technologies have improved our ability to interact and communicate with each other, such as the development of a written language, the printing press, the telephone, and most recently the Internet.

A modern blueprint of the French galleon La Belle.
The blueprint process is essentially the cyanotype process developed by the British astronomer and photographer Sir John Herschel in 1842. The photosensitive compound, a solution of ferric ammonium citrate and potassium ferricyanide, is coated onto paper. Areas of the compound exposed to strong light are converted to insoluble blue ferric ferrocyanide, or Prussian blue. The soluble chemicals are washed off with water leaving a light-stable print.

The Curta is a small, hand-cranked mechanical calculator introduced in 1948. It has an extremely compact design, a small cylinder that fits in the palm of the hand. It can be used to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and, with more difficulty, square roots and other operations.
